The lovely Museum of King Jan III’s Palace at Wilanow
As part of my daily life I work constantly with colleagues from around the globe. This is the one of the most exciting aspects of my professional life. I have the privilege to visit many beautiful countries and cities, taste their local cuisine, maybe learn a few new words in a new language, and more importantly, meet many new people. The latest opportunity I had was to visit Warsaw, the capital of Poland. I did not have any specific expectations, though every European city has its own charm, especially around the old town. However, I was pleasantly surprised to discover a vibrant and modern metropolis with the characteristic Eastern European charm that their town centres have. An array of medieval buildings and small winding streets fill the centre, which turns into a very grandiose – and more straightforward – number of avenues lined up with tall gorgeous buildings from the 1920s and 30s. All of these make Warsaw a great place to walk, if that is what you like, and enjoy the diverse offer of shops, restaurants and cafes.
The food is great, with Perogi filling your body like a nice hot home-cooked meal your granny used to make. Their doughy exterior only keep a juicy and sometimes creamy filling of anything you can think of, meats, veggies and cheeses. The usual suspects are present in the shape of black -and regular- sausages, potatoes in every imaginable form, and the fabulous LODY, a soft-serve ice cream so creamy you need to be ready to devour it quickly as it melts down your cone, and possibly hand.
Overall, the city offers a great experience for those looking for a nice city break or for a longer stay. I didn’t have time for any adventures outside of Warsaw ( the most popular ones being the concentration camps) but it is a good reason to want to go back. I am sure I will some time soon.
